A hobby is thought to be routine, normally during one’s leisure hours, usually with no particular purpose. In the United States, hobbies and recreational activities make up 8 percent of the population. These activities can range from simple games to extreme physical activities.
For many individuals and families, a pastime is a pastime, which means something that is enjoyable but does not require great effort. This pastime could range from collecting stamps to playing golf. One can find a hobby to interest everyone. There are so many hobby ideas that it would take pages to write about them all. For instance, you might want to try cooking your own meals, playing miniature golf, building model airplanes, building snowmen, sewing, reading, watching horoscopes, building or riding motorcycles, building or riding skateboards, and playing guitar. The next question is, “What interests do you have?” This can be answered with the answers given above. Hobbies should not be limited to one’s interests; they should include ones that are shared by the family, friends, co-workers, or the entire community. The typical hobbies of the working man or woman are varied. A list of the typical hobbies that people engage in during spare time could include but are not limited to, wood working, billiards, golf, fishing, stamping, painting, crochet, knitting, sewing, wood working, gardening, photography, woodworking, wood processing, music, television, radio, and playing games like solitaire, bridge, chess, and hot potato. Many of these hobbies are productive and enjoyable pastimes while others are not so profitable or productive. The engineer may focus on hobbies related to machinery such as electronics or mechanics, but these hobbies will not be considered relevant to the job application.
How do you identify which hobbies are relevant and helpful in your application? This can be determined by looking at past history and trends to identify the employers of specific pastimes. An example of this would be if the employer had been in the car business, he or she most likely would list car related pastimes in the employment history. An example of a list that does not reflect well on the potential hire’s ability to think outside of the box would be writing down lists of things that people do all the time without thinking before doing them. This type of list is not a great way to demonstrate the prospective employee’s creativity or adaptability.
The key to developing a successful and interesting hobby is to promote the activity. Hobbies should not just be listed in a resume because they do not have the professional appearance of a professional pastime. For the best outcome, include examples of the hobby in question as part of a list of activities that the candidate enjoys participating in. This will prove to an HR interview questioner that the prospective employee has engaged in some kind of hobby that relates to the position.
